Setting Up an Amazon WorkSpace with a Custom Bundled Image

Amazon WorkSpaces is a managed, secure Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution that allows you to provision virtual desktops in the cloud. One of its powerful features is the ability to use a custom bundled image, which lets you standardize desktop environments across your organization. Here’s how to set up a WorkSpace using a custom image and understand the key differences between personal and pool WorkSpaces, as well as “Always On” and “Auto Stop” options.

A custom bundled image allows you to create a standardized WorkSpace experience tailored to your organization’s needs. Follow these steps:

1. 1. Launch a WorkSpace:
      • Go to the AWS Management Console.
      • Navigate to Amazon WorkSpaces.
      • Create a WorkSpaces with your desired base image (Windows or Linux).
   2. Configure the WorkSpace:
      • Select Personal or Pools (Depending on your needs).
      • Select Use your own custom BYOL bundle.
      • Navigate the drop down menu and select your BYOL bundle that you created.
      • Then select Running mode (Always on or Auto stop).
      • When all settings are completed select next to continue to directory.
   3. Select a Directory:
      • Select an already created directory or create a new directory.
      • Create a new directory.
        1. Choose AWS Directory Service>Create Directory
        2. Select AWS Managed Microsoft AD or Simple AD depending on your needs (Amazon recommended Microsoft AD for Workspaces).
        3. Enter the following information (Organization name, Directory DNS name, and an Admin password).
        4. Add or select VPC and subnets.
        5. Review and create the directory.
      • Directory must be registered before use.
   4. Add Users to Directory:
      • You can add 5 users at a time.
      • Need username, first and last name and email address.
      • Users will receive an email about setting up their password and instructions for downloading the Workspaces app and registration code.
   5. Customization of Workspaces:
      • Bundle name will show as changeable in the dropdown.
      • Options are available for encryption and User volume size.
      • After all steps are completed select Create Workspaces.

Personal WorkSpaces:

• • Dedicated to a single user.
  • Personalized settings and data are retained between sessions.
  • Best for long-term or specialized work requirements.

Pool WorkSpaces:

• • Designed for shared use across multiple users.
  • Each session can start with a fresh environment.
  • Ideal for temporary access or task-based roles.

Always On:

• • The WorkSpace is constantly running.
  • Faster access as the desktop is always available.
  • Higher cost due to continuous resource consumption.

Auto Stop:

• • WorkSpace automatically stops after a period of inactivity.
  • Lower cost due to resource optimization.
  • Slight delay when resuming the session.

Setting up an Amazon WorkSpace with a custom bundled image provides a standardized and scalable desktop solution for your organization. Whether you choose a personal or pool WorkSpace, and whether you opt for “Always On” or “Auto Stop” modes, depends on your use case and budget considerations.
