When managing Amazon WorkSpaces, creating custom images and bundles can enhance user experience by providing tailored environments. If you want to add a custom Amazon Machine Image (AMI) to WorkSpaces and create a bundle.

Step 1: Create or Select Your Custom AMI in EC2

  1. Log in to the AWS Management Console: Navigate to the EC2 Dashboard.
  2. Locate Your AMI ID:
    • Go to the AMIs section under the EC2 dashboard.
    • Copy the AMI ID of the newly created or existing image that you want to use.

Step 2: Import the AMI into WorkSpaces

  1. Open the WorkSpaces Console: Navigate to WorkSpaces > Images.
  2. Initiate Image Import:
    • Click Create BYOL Image.
    • Enter the AMI ID you copied earlier.
    • Specify the image details (e.g., name, description, and Instance type).
    • Submit the import request.
  3. Wait for Import Completion:
    • The import process may take some time.
    • Once complete, the image will appear under the Images tab.

    Step 3: Create a WorkSpaces Bundle

    1. Open the WorkSpaces Console: Navigate to WorkSpaces > Images.
    2. Create a New Bundle:
      • Select your imported image from the list.
      • Select Actions > Create bundle.
      • Specify bundle details (e.g., name, description, hardware type, and storage settings).
      • Hardware type and storage settings can be changed later as well.
      • Review the settings and click Create Bundle.
    3. Bundle Availability:
      • The new bundle will appear in the Bundles section.
      • It can now be used to launch new WorkSpaces.

    Tips for Success

    • Testing: Always test your custom image in EC2 before importing it into WorkSpaces to ensure it works as expected.
    • Compliance: Ensure all software and configurations comply with AWS guidelines and licensing agreements.
    • Monitoring: Use AWS CloudWatch to monitor the performance of WorkSpaces launched from the custom bundle.
